, to Albert and Mildred Struven, Harris was the second of four children. She was ultimately arrested and booked for second-degree murder. The basic nutritional philosophy of reducing carbohydrates, eating plenty of oily fish, lean meat, fruit and vegetables and having a low intake of fats, salt and sweets was novel at the time and when The Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet was published in 1979, it became an immediate bestseller. After college, she married Jim Harris and they had two sons by the 1952. She later stated that she had planned to commit suicide after talking in person with Tarnower one last time. Known to his friends as Hy, Tarnower had three sisters, and attended Syracuse University, becoming a physician specializing in cardiology. She went to Laurel School in Shaker Heights, Ohio before attending Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. Though Tarnower showered Harris with gifts and exotic vacations, he had multiple relationships with other women during these years. Herman Tarnower was born in Brooklyn, New York to Jewish immigrants, Harry and Dora Tarnower. He was shot to death in 1980 at age 69 by Jean Harris. After the war, he initiated the Scarsdale Medical Center and was well regarded among his colleagues and patients. It was later learned that she was physically addicted to one of her prescriptions unaware to her at the time.

She turned her car around and followed the police cars back to his home. Harris was troubled by the actions of the students. In the 1970s, Tarnower hired Lynne Tryforos, a divorcee more than thirty years his junior, to work as a secretary-receptionist at the Scarsdale Medical Center. The jury did not believe her testimony and convicted her, because manslaughter was not an option during the deliberations. Harris shot Tarnower four times at close range. On the evening of March 9, Madeira faculty members noted she seemed despondent and distant. She was arrested and tried for second degree murder, claiming at the three-month trial that the gun had discharged accidentally while Tarnower tried to wrestle it away from her. Tarnower prescribed Harris multiple medications over the course of several years. In 1945, she graduated magna cum laude from Smith with a degree in economics. During World War II, he joined the US Army Medical Corps and was promoted to major. Harris worked as the headmistress of the Madeira School for girls in McLean, Virginia, while continuing her long-distance relationship with Tarnower.
